What is a Pain Physician?
A Pain Physician is a doctor who has undergone Specialist training in the assessment and management of pain patients.
Pain Medicine is indeed a very young field within Medicine but has been formally recognised in Australia as an independent Medical Specialty in 2005. This formal recognition is due to the tremendous efforts of The Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the submission to the Australian Medical Council gives an excellent insight into the state of Pain Medicine within Australia. Many of the facts mentioned can equally be extrapolated to New Zealand and indeed an application is pending in New Zealand for recognition of Pain Medicine as a succinct Specialty.
A Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine has undergone at least one year of Specialist Training in Pain Medicine in an accredited pain clinic within Australasia and has fulfilled all requirements including a written and oral exam.
Pain Information
As a Pain Physician I learn more about pain every day and whatever insights I acquire I put onto this web site (given the spare time).
Many pages remain to be written and many facts to be uncovered - it will always continue to grow as long as myself or future contributors add their time and efforts.

Acknowledgements
- My work on this web site has been influenced by Dr. Richard Walker, Consultant Pain Physician in Coventry, UK. His web site does indeed come very close to my own vision of what I wanted to create for New Zealand. A visit to his site will provide you with a great insight into a UK version of Pain Medicine.
- My vision of this web page is to grow into a web page similar to that of Kerry Brandis, Consultant Anaesthetist in Queensland, Australia who has been instrumental in providing examination information for anaesthetic registrars throughout Australasia.
- Dr. Sarah Andreae-Jones has kindly given me the permission to use her astonishing work on Arachnoiditis to be used on my web page. I am indeed grateful since Sarah has put in a tremendous amount of work and I am honored to have worked along side of her in Plymouth, UK.
