What does it mean to have a Bio-Psycho-Social Assessment?
- Before I will see you the first time
- What your pain physician needs to know in a nut-shell...
- Fees and Charges related to Procedures
Before I will see you the first time
- We will gather as much information as possible from your referral and the copies of other health professionals that have already done their best to find out as much as possible about your pain and the way it affects you.
- A Pain Questionnaire will help you to remember the detailed facts we need to assess all the facets of your assessment (see Table1 below).
What your pain physician needs to know in a nut-shell...
- Where is the pain located?
- When did it start?
- How does it feel like? Describe it over the phone to a friend
- How bad is it? Imagine the figure "0" for "No pain" and the figure "10" for "the worst pain imaginable"; how does your pain feel like now? What was the worst pain within the last week, what was the least pain like last week?
- What made the pain better, what made it worse?
- Which medications have you taken in the past? What was the maximum dose you have achieved and what did it to the pain? Did it give you any side-effects? Why did you stop this medication?
- Which medications do you take now? How does this medication affect your pain ? Does it give you any side-effects ?
- Have you had any other interventions over the last few months / years? (e.g. physiotherapy / psychology / ....)? How did this intervention alter the perception of your pain ?
- How does your previous life affect your pain?
- How does the pain affect your current and future life ? (See Psychosocial Assessment)
- There are many other issues / concerns which we will cover before we are able to give you the proper treatment plan to encompass medications, physiotherapy, psychological input, occupational therapy, etc. etc. .
When I will see you the first time
- I will meet you at a pain clinic of your choice in Rotorua, Taupo, hamilton or Napier and will go over your story, the details of your pain and your experiences since the pain started.
- I will examine the part(s) of your body closely related to the pain.
- I will try to make sense out of all the details / facts collected and will provide you, your GP and your case manager (if appropriate) with a detailed management plan. This plan will cover things you can do yourself as well as management options to be addressed by your GP, your case manager, other specialists in the pain field and Rotorua Pain Specialists.
